COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALISTS provide technical support for customers and other users. They install, modify, clean, and repair computer hardware and software. They also work on peripheral equipment such as monitors and keyboards. They test and monitor equipment to evaluate adequacy for the user. They read manuals, talk to users, and conduct computer diagnostics to find problems and provide technical assistance. They refer major problems to vendors for service. They keep records of problems and action taken. They develop training materials and procedures, and conduct training programs.

Entry Requirements

A bachelor's degree in a computer-related field is required for some COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST positions. Other jobs may require only a computer-related associate's degree. Many companies are becoming more flexible about requiring a college degree for support positions because of the explosive demand for specialists with relevant computer experience substituting for formal education. However, certification and practical experience demonstrating these skills will be essential for applicants without a degree. Completion of a certification-training program, offered by a variety of vendors and product makers, is becoming the minimum standard for applicants to qualify for entry-level positions.
