Work Tasks

FLORAL DESIGNERS cut and arrange fresh, dried, or artificial flowers and foliage into designs to express the sentiments of the sender and meet the needs and requests of customers. They trim flowers and arrange bouquets, wreaths, sprays, corsages, boutonnieres, terrariums, and dish gardens. Floral designers usually work from written orders indicating the occasion, customer preference for color and type of flower, price, and the date, time, and place the arrangement or plant is to be delivered. Floral designers may offer suggestions to their customers about the types of flowers to use in an arrangement. Floral designers may supervise assistants who carry out their designs.

Entry Requirements

Employers generally look for high school graduates who have a flair for color and a desire to learn. Most FLORAL DESIGNERS learn their skills on the job. However, completion of formal training is an asset for floral designers. Vocational and technical schools offer programs that last less than a year. Community and junior colleges, and universities offer two and four-year programs in floral design, floriculture, horticulture, or ornamental horticulture. No special licensing or certification is required for floral designers.
