Work Tasks

PEST CONTROLLERS spray chemical mixtures or toxic gases and set traps to control or get rid of pests that can pose serious risks to human health and safety. These pests include rats, mice, termites, spiders, fleas, ants, bees, and roaches that infest households, buildings, or surrounding areas. Pest controllers inspect restaurants, hotels, homes, offices, food stores, and other buildings for pests. Pest controllers identify the pests and determine the best way to control or get rid of them. They use their knowledge of pests and their habits along with pest management techniques, such as applying chemicals, setting traps, operating equipment, and modifying structures, to eliminate them.

Entry Requirements

Employers prefer to hire PEST CONTROLLERS with at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Pest controllers must have basic skills in mathematics, chemistry, and writing. Both federal and state laws regulate pest control workers. These laws require them to be certified through training and examination. Requirements for pest controllers vary by state. Pest controllers usually begin their careers as apprentice technicians. They are trained in pesticide safety and use. In addition, they must train in each pest control category in which they wish to practice.
