Work Tasks

POSTMASTERS are responsible for coordinating and supervising all post office activities. They organize and supervise the processing of all incoming and outgoing mail, issuing and cashing money orders, selling stamps, bonds, and certificates, and collecting box rents to ensure efficient service to customers. In addition, postmasters supervise general delivery services, rural or city routes, and highway contract routes. They also coordinate activities of workers engaged in postal and related work in assigned post office.

Entry Requirements

POSTMASTERS are usually promoted through the ranks within the U.S. Postal Service. Most require a four-year bachelor's degree. Employees in these occupations usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training. No special licensing or certification is required for postmasters. You must be a citizen of the United States and pass a postal service examination to work in the postal service.
