Work Tasks

PROOFREADERS read copy to detect and mark for correction any grammatical, typographical, or compositional errors. Most proofreading is done on hard copy and proofreaders use standard symbols to correct work. They mark corrections for the typesetter to make. There is increasing use of computers in proofreading. Proofreaders make sure the spelling, punctuation, and grammar is accurate. They check the factual accuracy and consistency of the text. Proofreaders make sure the typesetter has followed the instructions of the copy-editor and that all the material is included and put in the proper place.

Entry Requirements

Employers prefer to hire PROOFREADERS with at least a high school education, with emphasis on English skills, such as grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Courses in printing and related subjects will also be helpful. Some book and magazine publishers prefer proofreaders to have a bachelor's degree in English, humanities, or modern languages, since their work may include editing of manuscripts. Other degree subjects may be required in order to proofread more specialized material. No special licensing or certification is required for proofreaders.
