EMERGENCY MANAGERS coordinate emergency workers and volunteers when hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, enemy attacks, and other natural or man-made disasters occur. They coordinate disaster response or crisis management activities, such as ordering evacuations, opening public shelters, and implementing special needs plans and programs. They collaborate with other officials in order to prepare and analyze damage assessments following disasters and emergencies. They make sure that government, volunteers, medical personnel, and others work together as a team.

Entry Requirements

Most employers prefer applicants for EMERGENCY MANAGER positions to have at least a bachelor's degree in emergency management plus several years of experience. An increasing number of employers prefer applicants with a master's degree. Many colleges and universities offer degrees in emergency management. Participation in an internship to gains hands-on experience in the field is an asset.
