Work Tasks

INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS DIRECTORS form labor policy, oversee industrial labor regulations, and negotiate collective bargaining agreements. They coordinate grievance procedures to handle complaints resulting from disputes under the contract for firms with unionized employees. They advise and work with the director of human resources, other managers, and members of their staff; because, all aspects of personnel policy, such as wages, benefits, pensions, and work practices, may be involved in drawing up a new or revised contract. Industrial relations directors study labor laws and regulations, collective bargaining contracts, and various other developments in the field.

Entry Requirements

An advanced degree is increasingly important for INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS DIRECTORS. A strong background in industrial relations and law is highly desirable. Previous experience is an asset. Voluntary certification as a Professional in Human Resources or a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) may be beneficial for future career opportunities and a broader understanding of the field in which they are working.
