Work Tasks

HOTEL/MOTEL MANAGERS are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the hotel. They set room rates, allocate funds to departments, and approve expenditures. They set standards for guest service, decor, housekeeping, food quality, and banquet operations. They coordinate reservations and room assignments, and hire, train, and oversee the front desk staff. They make sure guestrooms, meeting and banquet rooms, and public areas are clean, orderly, and well maintained. They direct the food services of the hotel. They resolve problems and emergencies that may arise, and handle complaints guests may have.

Entry Requirements

Post-secondary training in hotel or restaurant management is preferred for HOTEL/MOTEL MANAGERS, but a liberal arts degree may be sufficient with related experience. A bachelor's degree in hotel and restaurant administration is strong preparation. Community colleges and universities offer associate, bachelor's, and graduate degree programs, which include instruction in hotel administration, accounting, economics, marketing, housekeeping, food service management and catering, and hotel maintenance engineering. Computer training is also important.
