Work Tasks

METER READERS read electric, gas, water, or steam usage meters, and record the amounts used by customers in both residential and commercial establishments. They walk or drive along their routes to take these readings. Meter readers record the data in a route book or hand-held computer. If they cannot get the readings, they either estimate the amount used or leave postcards for the customer to fill out. Meter readers keep a record of receipt and completion of meter service.

Entry Requirements

Employers prefer to hire high school graduates. Beginning METER READERS usually learn their skills on the job from an experienced meter reader. They learn how to read the meters and determine the usage rate. They also must learn the route that they have to travel in order to read all their customers' meters. Meter readers need no special license or certificate.
