Work Tasks

ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONICS TECHNICIANS use the principles and theories of science, engineering, and mathematics to solve technical problems. They help design, develop, and manufacture electrical and electronic equipment such as radios, audio systems, radar, sonar, televisions, navigational equipment, and computers. Electronic technicians assist engineers and scientists in research and development. They build or set up equipment, prepare and conduct experiments, and calculate or record the results. Technicians who work with field representatives help customers install, operate, and maintain complex technical equipment.

Entry Requirements

Most employers prefer to hire ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONICS TECHNICIANS with at least a 2-year degree in engineering technology. Training is available at technical institutes, 2-year colleges, extension divisions of colleges and universities, public and private vocational-technical schools, and through some technical training programs in the armed services. No special licensing or certification is required for electrical/electronics technicians. The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology (NICET) has established a voluntary certification program for engineering technicians.
