DATABASE ADMINISTRATORS control the day-to-day operation of a computer database. They work with database management systems software and determine ways to organize and store data. They decide who can see which parts of a database and define the rights of each user. They identify user requirements, set up computer databases, and test and coordinate modifications to the systems. They protect the database by backing it up daily or more often. They find and correct errors in the database when the computer crashes. They make sure there is enough space for the database to grow; there are backup copies in case of problems; and people who enter data are using correct procedures.

Entry Requirements

Employers prefer to hire DATABASE ADMINISTRATORS with a bachelor's degree in computer science, information science, or management information systems (MIS). Management information systems programs are usually part of a business school or college. Some employers prefer individuals with a master's degree in business administration (MBA), plus a concentration in information systems, as more firms move their business to the Internet. Continuous education and study is necessary to keep up with the rapid advances in computer technology.
