IOWA CITY, Iowa—ACT, Inc., has chosen the winners of its annual poster contest. The winners were selected from more than 500 entries from 47 different states. The purpose of the poster is to encourage students to plan and prepare for college. Winners are selected based on the poster's creativity, visual appeal and overall impact. Christian Klein, a senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is this year’s first-place winner. “My AP art teacher told me less is more and to keep it simple,” said Klein. Klein will receive a $5,000 scholarship to the college of his choice. His winning design — “Only One You” — will go out to 30,000 high schools nationwide as a way to publicize ACT’s 2012-2013 test dates. Klein, a talented artist, musician and actor, hasn’t decided where he’ll attend school, but wants to pursue a career in directing films. Second-place finisher Gabe Diaz-Barriga of Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet in Nashville, Tennessee, will receive a $2,500 scholarship for his entry, “Set Yourself Apart.” Currently a high school senior, Diaz-Barriga wants to major in entrepreneurial studies in college. “It’s what I immediately envisioned; I wanted to profile several classmates on why they took the ACT. I thought it turned out really well and the response from my family and friends was very positive,” said Diaz-Barriga. Francesca Manto will receive a $1,000 scholarship for her entry “Take the Test that Takes You Far.” Manto is a senior at Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida. She plans on studying International Relations while in college. “I knew I wanted something bold, yet simple. The ultimate goal was to make it effective and intriguing." said Manto.
