60 Years of Helping People Achieve Success

ACT was founded in Iowa City in 1959 by University of Iowa education professor E.F. Lindquist and University of Iowa registrar and director of admissions Ted McCarrel. Sixty years ago, ACT disrupted the college admission testing industry by focusing on academic achievement, not aptitude. Today, our founder’s story still rings true, and our mission—of helping all people achieve education and workplace success—matters more than ever. Learn more about our organization and critical research from the annual Condition of College and Career Readiness report.

The Heart of Our Mission: Equity

At ACT, we believe that any student has the potential to learn, and that a student’s background or family income should not determine their college and career opportunities. Learn about how we’re leveling the playing field for all learners.
