Improving School Climate

Improving School Climate by Revisiting Student Discipline

One way is by revisiting student discipline. Remember: You are teaching a student something every time they’re disciplined—for better or worse. We need to restore discipline as instruction, first and foremost.

  • Recognize discipline as instruction.
  • Explore, adapt, and implement restorative justice procedures.
  • Collect and use data about discipline inequities.
Other strategies that can improve school climate include:
  • Involve Family and Community
  • Build Faculty Trust and Collaboration
  • Provide SEL: Social Emotional Learning
  • Revisit Student Discipline
