Supporting New Test Options

Evidence Based Research

Overview

ACT is focused on helping people to prepare for whatever comes next. That's why we are developing new options for the ACT test to provide more opportunities for students to demonstrate their overall academic achievement and potential.

In preparation for the rollout of these new test options, a tremendous amount of research has been conducted. The research presented here supports the adoption of these new initiatives and provides easy access . The goal of presenting this research here is to provide education professionals easy access to the evidence collected to date so they can make informed, empirically based decisions.

Evidence Supporting Superscoring

Students Can Keep Their Best Section Scores, and Use Their Best Overall Score

The ACT Superscore is beneficial because it takes the average of the four best subject scores from each ACT test attempt—and counts it as your official score.

Evidence Supporting Section Retesting

Section Retesting: Retake One Specific Test Section, Instead of the Full Test

Section retesting enables students to showcase their skills and accomplishments gained over a lifetime – not just their test-taking abilities on a particular day.

Evidence Supporting Online Testing

Faster Results: Choose to Test Online or on Paper at an ACT Test Center

Students will be able to choose how they want to take the ACT test—online or on paper, if their testing center offers both options. Students who test online will get results in as soon as two business days for more opportunities to meet admission and scholarship deadlines.
